Tips for creating your questions

Set Clear Expectations

Incentives & Quality Standards:

All respondents must be paid only upon full completion of the research tasks. It's important to include a note about the expected quality of responses—both in the screener and in the actual project.
Example: “You will receive the incentive upon full and high-quality completion of all tasks.”

Timeline & Commitment:

Be transparent about the research period and participation requirements. Include a commitment question like:
“If selected, you will need to complete [interviews/app tasks] between [start date] and [end date]. Can you confirm you are available and willing to participate during this time?”

Ask Smart, Non-Leading Questions

Avoid revealing what you're looking for too early. Don’t start with overly specific questions like:
“Do you use Sony headphones regularly?”
Instead, qualify gradually:

  1. “Do you have a pair of headphones?”

  2. “Do you use them regularly?”

  3. “Do you own a Sony pair of headphones?”

Keep it Focused

Recommended length:

Aim for 8–15 questions in total.

This keeps your screener concise, participant-friendly, and effective without being overwhelming.

Include Open-Ended Questions

Add one or two open questions to screen for how articulate participants are. This helps ensure they can communicate effectively during the research.

Use Technical Best Practices

  • Make all questions required so participants must answer each one to proceed.

  • Use skip logic to tailor the question flow based on participant responses.

  • Never ask for personal contact information such as phone numbers or email addresses in the screener—this violates privacy and data protection guidelines.

Types of Questions

There are 6 types of questions for you to choose from, outlined below.

Question Type
Details
Radio (Single select)This is a question with multiple pre-populated answer fields.
Applicants can only choose one option as their answer.

For each answer, mark it ‘Qualify’ or ‘Disqualify’.
If you select ‘other’, a free text box will be available.

Applicants do not get any notification of Qualifying or Not Qualifying when they complete the screener.

Check box (Multi- select)This is a question with multiple pre-populated answer fields.
Applicants can choose more than one option as their answer.

For each answer, you must assign one of the following:
  • 'May select’: choosing this answer is not mandatory to qualify
  • ‘Must select’: choosing this answer is mandatory to qualify
  • 'Disqualify': choosing this answer will disqualify them.

If you assign multiple MUST SELECT answers, a respondent must select all of them to be marked as Qualified for this question.

Applicants do not get any notification of Qualifying or Not Qualifying when they complete the screener.

Multi-line text boxThis is a question with a free text answer field with capacity for multiple lines of text for the respondent to write their answer.

Single-line text boxThis is a question with a free text answer field with capacity for one line of text for the respondent to write their answer.

Number BoxThis is a question with an answer box that will only accept numerical values.
Ensure to include the value within your question, eg hours per day, times per week, etc.

Slider (number selector)You will be prompted to add a minimum and maximum value.
Ensure to include the slider value within your question, eg hours per day, times per week, etc.

The respondent can move the slider left and right to determine their answer.

'Required' Check Box

For each question, you have the option to select the 'Required' Check Box.

This means the respondent must answer the question in order to progress to the next question.

We recommend setting all questions to 'Required'.

Assign Skip Logic to your questions

You can apply skip logic after you have finished adding your questions.

You will see 'Skip Logic' available as an option on 'Radio (single select)' and 'Check box (multi- select)' questions.

Adding skip logic to certain questions lets you create a custom pathway through the screener.

Skip logic makes your questions skip forward based on how the participants answer the current question.

Logic fields appear to allow you to choose what should happen/ where the respondent should go if they answer in a particular way eg, if someone picks a particular answer you can set it so they will automatically be taken straight to the end of the survey or to a particular question within the screener, etc.

TypeSkip Logic
Radio (single select)Radio skip logic allows for one additional layer of logic to be applied to each answer beyond Qualified (1) or Disqualified (2);
The additional logic layer can designate which question/ which part of a screener a participant moves to based on the answer.

Check box (multi- select)Checkbox skip logic allows for one or multiple layers of logic to be applied using AND/OR logic beyond the answer level logic of May Select (1), Must Select (2), Disqualify (3).

You can choose single answer logic or multiple answer logic here.

Selecting 'End of Survey' will immediately stop the survey for an applicant, preventing them from answering any further questions.

  • Use this option only if you are certain you want to disqualify someone based on a single answer.

Instead, we recommend using 'Disqualify' as your qualification option without 'End of Survey'.

  • This allows applicants to complete all questions, giving you full visibility into their responses.
  • You can then decide later whether to qualify or disqualify them.

If you choose to loosen your screening criteria later, you can review your 'Not Qualified' applicants and manually qualify those you now wish to include.

Move your Questions

1. Use the up/down arrows to move an existing question further up or further down in the flow of your questions.
